Assistant Accountant

New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

What you will be doing

We’re looking for a commercially minded and detail-focused Assistant Accountant to join our Finance Operations team on a 9-month fixed-term basis. Reporting to the Financial Accountant, you’ll play a key role in supporting month-end close, audit and tax compliance, and day to day finance operations including invoicing, payments, and banking, while helping ensure accurate financial reporting and efficient processes across the function.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll partner closely with both finance and operational teams to provide valuable business support and insight in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key responsibilities include:

• Support month-end close including journals, accruals, and reconciliations 
• Assist with preparation of financial reports and analysis 
• Partnering with corporate cost centres to support business performance and financial decision-making
• Support audit processes and prepare required documentation 
• Assist with tax compliance and statutory reporting obligations 
• Process invoices, payments, and manage day-to-day banking activities 
• Maintain accurate financial records and general ledger integrity 
• Support accounts payable, and intercompany activities
• Contribute to process improvements and efficiency initiatives across finance

What you will bring to the role

You’ll be a proactive and results-driven individual working towards a CA qualification or holding a relevant accounting degree, with strong attention to detail and a collaborative approach. You’ll enjoy working in a dynamic environment and be confident building relationships across the business.

To succeed in this role, you will bring:

• Working towards CA qualification or holding a relevant accounting degree 
• Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial processes 
• Exposure to ERP systems (e.g. SAP or similar) is desirable 
• Strong Excel skills with the ability to manage and analyse data 
• Some understanding of tax compliance (training provided) 
• High attention to detail and willingness to learn 
• Previous experience in a finance or accounts role is advantageous
