Fitter Welder - Fixed Term Contract


New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

Our Central Maintenance Group team is looking for two experienced Fitter Welders to join us on a 6-month fixed-term basis.

To be considered for this opportunity, you must hold the New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4) (or an equivalent recognised trade qualification).

About the Role

We are seeking two skilled and motivated Fitter Welders to join our Central Maintenance Group team based at New Zealand Steel in Glenbrook.

Reporting to the CMG Team Leader, you will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of operational plant and equipment across site. The role also involves providing mechanical support for breakdowns, completing preventative maintenance inspections, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced industrial environment and takes pride in delivering quality workmanship.

Hours of Work

This role operates on an 8-hour day shift, Monday to Friday. Applicants should be aware that overtime and call-out work may be required from time to time.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will be a reliable and safety-focused tradesperson with a strong mechanical aptitude and a commitment to high-quality work. You will also demonstrate:

  • A strong team focus, while also being able to work independently when required 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills 
  • Sound analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making ability 
  • A positive attitude and willingness to take ownership of your work 
  • A proven record of reliability, attendance, and strong work ethic 
  • Welding experience in medium or heavy fabrication environments
