Mechanical Reliability Engineer
Pacific Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, is New Zealand’s only manufacturer of reinforcing bar and coil products.
We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Mechanical Reliability Engineer to join our Pacific Steel Rolling Mill Team. We are in Otahuhu, Auckland.
Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, you'll be a key driver of reliability improvement across the Rolling Mill. You'll lead initiatives to eliminate recurring equipment failures, optimise maintenance strategies, and influence asset investment decisions that improve plant availability, reduce risk, and enhance operational performance.
What Will Success Look Like?
- Lead defect elimination and root cause analysis (RCA) activities to improve plant reliability and performance
- Develop, review and optimise maintenance strategies for critical plant assets
- Analyse equipment performance and reliability data to identify improvement opportunities
- Lead equipment improvement, refurbishment and reliability projects from concept through to implementation
- Provide technical guidance and support for complex equipment failures and operational issues
- Coach and mentor maintenance personnel, promoting a strong reliability and defect elimination culture
- Drive lifecycle asset management decisions and support long-term capital planning.
- Support shutdowns, down days and major maintenance activities while ensuring safe and efficient execution
Who We're Looking For
In this role, you'll help shape the long-term reliability strategy of the Rolling Mill. Working across maintenance and operations, you'll use reliability engineering principles to identify improvement opportunities, prevent equipment failures, and maximise the performance and lifespan of critical assets.
In this role, you will contribute to the ongoing improvement, maintenance, and plant reliability and asset performance through the development of preventative maintenance strategies, equipment failure analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives. You will also play a key role in managing the lifecycle of ageing assets and driving reliability-focused outcomes across the plant.
We are looking for a proactive, solutions-focused Mechanical Engineer who is committed to maintaining high safety standards. You will enjoy working collaboratively within a team environment while also taking ownership of technical and reliability improvement initiatives.
What you’ll bring:
- A Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 5+ years of experience, ideally working within a heavy industrial or large-scale manufacturing environment
- strong knowledge of Reliability-Centred maintenance (RCM), defect elimination, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Kepner Tregoe (KT) and continuous improvement methodologies
- demonstrated experience developing maintenance strategies and improving equipment reliability
- sound knowledge of rotating equipment, hydraulics, lubrication systems and condition monitoring techniques.
- Experience using Maximo or similar Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- strong stakeholder engagement and problem-solving skills.

This is a permanent role. 8-Hour Days, minimum 40 hours per week, with the opportunity for additional work during weekends and callouts.
What we offer
The base salary for this role is approximately between $115,000-130,000 per annum, which includes appropriate allowances. The role is also eligible to participate in an incentive scheme which is paid yearly subject to company performance.
