Plant Maintenance Engineer


New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

We are currently seeking an experienced Plant Maintenance Engineer to join the SteelServ team in a permanent role working standard 8-hour days.

About the role

Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, you will play a critical role in maximising plant and mobile equipment reliability and availability to ensure SteelServ operations consistently meet production, safety, quality, and cost targets.

You will apply your strong mechanical and technical knowledge to analyse equipment failure modes, identify improvement opportunities, and drive effective maintenance strategies across both fixed plant and mobile equipment. Your leadership capability will be key in supervising and supporting a team of trades specialists, ensuring work is planned, prioritised, and executed safely and efficiently.

As a hands-on leader, you will coordinate daily maintenance activities, manage resources, and work closely with operations and engineering teams to maintain plant condition within budgeted throughput and maintenance costs, while fostering a positive and high-performing team environment.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Trade or Engineering qualification in Mechanical or Electrical disciplines, or significant equivalent experience
  • Strong mechanical and mobile equipment background, ideally within heavy industry or production environments
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of CAT, Volvo, and Komatsu equipment
  • Proven supervisory or leadership experience, leading trades teams and coordinating maintenance activities
  • Sound understanding of maintenance management and reliability principles
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and organisational skills
  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced operational environment
  • A strong, uncompromising commitment to health and safety
  • Clear communication skills and a collaborative, team-focused approach
