Product Technologist

New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

We’re looking for a motivated and technically minded Product Technologist to join our Quality Assurance team on a permanent basis, reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager.

In this key role, you’ll help ensure our products and processes meet the highest standards of quality, safety, performance, and compliance. You’ll apply your expertise in materials science and metallurgy to support production, drive process improvements, maintain key certifications, and contribute to our continuous improvement culture.

What you’ll be doing

• Monitor and enhance product mechanical properties and process capability.
• Collaborate with upstream plants to ensure the quality of feed material to downstream operations.
• Investigate product failures and customer complaints, identifying root causes and implementing solutions.
• Maintain and support quality documentation, standards, and accreditation requirements (IANZ, ACRS).
• Support product governance, including test certificate validation and internal audits.
• Provide guidance to graduates, support engineers, and Sales teams on metallurgical and technical matters.
• Contribute to cross-functional projects, business improvements, and product development initiatives.

What we’re looking for

• A tertiary qualification in Materials, Metallurgy, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline.
• 3+ years’ experience in a metallurgical or similar technical role.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• A detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to quality and safety.
• Experience with quality systems or within the steel industry will be an advantage.
