Product Technologist


New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Product Technologist to join our Quality Assurance team on a permanent basis.

Reporting to Quality Assurance Manager, this role is central to ensuring our products and processes continue to meet high standards of quality, governance, safety, and performance. You’ll provide technical expertise in metallurgy, support production and process development, investigate product failures, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and improving product mechanical properties and capability
  • Managing slabs with out of specification chemistry 
  • Investigating product failures and customer complaints, driving root cause solutions
  • Maintaining and supporting quality documentation, standards, and accreditation requirements (IANZ, ACRS)
  • Supporting product governance activities, including test certificate validation and internal audits
  • Coaching and guiding graduates, supporting engineers, and KAMs on metallurgical parameters to fulfil customers inquiries
  • Contributing to cross-functional projects , business improvements and product development. 

What we’re looking for:

  • A tertiary qualification in Materials, Metallurgy, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline
  • At least 2 years’ experience in a metallurgical or similar technical role
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • A meticulous approach to detail, with a commitment to quality and safety
  • Experience with quality systems or the steel industry is an advantage
