Steelmaking Operators


New Zealand Steel, a wholly owned subsidiary of BlueScope, manufactures and markets a range of flat rolled steel products for the building, construction, manufacturing and agricultural sectors.  You may know us for our flagship COLORSTEEL® brand.

What you will be doing

We have a number of permanent opportunities available to work as an Operator in the Steel Plant as part of our plan to commission our new $300mil Electric Arc Furnace.

Our Operators are the heart of our business and are responsible for keeping the processes running. This Operator position provides you with on-the-job training to grow within the plant.

You will be responsible for the continuity of operation in the production of liquid steel to meet the needs of the Plant and our Customers.

Working in a large industrial production environment, you will be operating heavy machinery in a hazardous environment where health and safety is the top priority.

The normal working hours for this position are 42 hours per week (12 hour / 4 shift rotating pattern) however to ensure that operational requirements are met, you may be required to work additional hours when needed.

What you will bring to the role

If you are a people person, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude, you would be a great candidate! 

You will need to be someone who enjoys a challenge. Your self-driven and proactive nature along with attention to detail and problem-solving skills will be the keys to your success in this role.

Overhead crane operation and/or operational experience would be advantageous.

Computer literacy is important but so is a positive attitude, a willingness to work as part of a team and take ownership of your work and go the extra mile to get the job done.

Candidates with technical background will also be considered, however this is not a requirement.

Each shift crew consists of a team which is multi-skilled in a range of tasks and training will be provided to achieve the desired level of multi-skilling.
